Goans in Indian Taekwondo team to Vietnam

Peter Fernandes, treasurer of TAG was appointed Indian team coach while Tanvi Nadkarni, Senniel Gomes, Senia Gomes and Neha Thomas will participate in first Junior and second Senior Asian Poomsae Taekwondo from May 3 to 5 in Vietnam.

Tanvi Nadkarni will represent India in senior singles category and mixed pair category while Senniel Gomes, Sania Gomes and Neha Thomas will participate in first junior group event.

Nhehern Acharya wins four golds at World Yoga Championship

Thirteen-year-old Nhehern Acharya lived up to top expectations as he set a record, winning won four gold for India at World Yoga Championship in Rosario City, Argentina.

Nhehern won the gold in yogasana display, artistic display, rhythmic yogasana, artistic air display.

Nhehern, a student of Dr K B Hedgewar High School, Panjim, who is also the award winner in the last championship, kept up his good display, improving on his last performance at the world level. The 13-member India team won in all 12 gold, 7 silver and 13 bronze in eight events. India won the overall championship beating hosts Argentina in the finals.

Angela Naik - First Goan Lady International Taekwondo Referee

Angela R Naik, became the first Goan lady international referee as she cleared the International Referee Examination conducted by World Taekwondo Federation in Bangalore.

Angela who had participated in 4th World Taekwondo Championship in Cairo qualified for the semi-finals in the individual event and stood overall 9th.

In the mixed pair event, Angela alongwith Trilok Subbha of Sikkim qualified for the semi-finals and stood overall 12th. In all, 47 countries participated.

Francisco Clemente and Sharnifa Da Costa at the Macau Marathon

Marathon runners Francisco Clemente and Sharnifa Da Costa participated in the Macau Galaxy Entertainment International Marathon 2009 held on December 6.

Sharnifa da Costa finished 19th out of 202 runners in the half marathon. Was adjudged to have finished a joint 3rd in her age category of 24 - 26 years.

Francis Clemente finished 14th out of 977 in the full marathon.

Macau Marathon is a prestigious International event attracting participants from many European countries. Both the runners were accompanied by Ms Anita Maria Fernandes Rodrigues, who was the manager.

Angela Abreu e Naik at the 4th World Taekwondo Poomsae Championship

Goa’s ace taekwondo exponent Angela Abreu e Naik donned India colours when she participated in the 4th World Taekwondo Poomsae championship in Cairo, Egypt, from November 30 to December 2.

Angela participated in the Masters event.

This was Angela’s fourth international participation, having earlier participated twice at Asian events in Taipei and Philipines and the world event in Hong Kong. She was the lone Goan in the 12-member India team.

Sandesh Narvekar as manager of Indian bodybuilding team

Mr Sandesh Narvekar, president of Goa State Bodybuilding Association and Vice-President of Indian Bodybuilding Federation made Goa proud by representing India nine times as manager of Indian team. The Goan association has congratulated Mr Narvekar for this achievement. The IBBF also feted Mr Narvekar, who is the youngest international judge in bodybuilding.

The world bodybuilding championships were held in Dubai – UAE recently where a total of 69 nations participated. Ankur Sharma of India won the bronze medal and Diraj Goswal of India bagged the 5th place. In all, 7 bodybuilders participated on behalf of IBBF.

Mangesh Kuttikar at the World Paralympic Archery Games

Goa’s Mangesh Kuttikar has been selected for the India archery team by Paralympic Archery Federation of India (PAFI) for the World Paralympic Archery Games to be held at Kanteerava Stadium, Bangalore from November 21 to December 3.

Kuttikar was selected based on his excellent performance at First National Paralympic Archery Championship and selection trials.

According to Vilas Dawane, President, PAFI, Kuttikar will compete in sitting balance in compound bow division.

Kuttikar, an MPT employee, today moved to SAI Training Hostel at Ponda for training purpose. Since he did not have a bow and an arrow, he applied for a loan with the MPT Society and with his brother and sister also helping him, he managed to purchase the equipment costing Rs 1.50 lakh.

“I need to practice vigorously so that I win a medal for India,” Kuttikar told Herald from Ponda tonight.

Faijaz at the World Arm Wrestling Championship

Goa’s Faijaz V.P, who represented India at World Arm Wrestling Championship in Egypt from October 22 to 27 won a bronze medal in 86kg category. In all, 57 countries participated.

Earlier, Faijaz represented Goa at the National Championship held in Uttar Pradesh were he won the gold medal in the same category. Faijaz is the first Goan to win a gold medal at the National Championship.

Faijaz is working as an officer for Air Arabia at Dabolim international airport. He was sponsored by Air Arabia.

Talasha Prabhu for the World Championships 2009

Talasha Prabhu represented India in the World Aquatic Championships 2009 held at Rome from July 17 to August 2. She participated in the 100m and 4 x 200m relay freestyle events.

She also represented India at the Asian Youth championship held in Singapore from June 29 to August 5. She participated in the 100m and 200m freestyle events.

She had been selected to train with 34 other Indian swimmers at the South Africa High Performance Center at the University of Pretoria for a period of more than a month from March 2 to April 1.

Joel Joaquim Fernandes for India U-13

Midfielder Joel Joaquim Fernandes represented the India U-13 team in the AFC Under-13 Boys Festival of Football for the South Asian region to be held from May 17 to 24, 2009.

India was held by hosts Iran to a 1-1 draw in the Format I tournament and suffered a surprising 0-2 defeat by the hands of Afghanistan. The boys had their last Format I match against the Maldives, whom the Indians trashed 4-0.

The Indian youngsters had a better outing in their Format II tournament matches. They went down to Iran (0-3), but were able regroup against Afghanistan (1-0) and Maldives (6-0).

Nikita Pinto and Preeti Shinde for India U-14 Football

Nikita Pinto and Preeti Shinde represented India Under-14 Girls squad in the first-ever AFC Under-14 Girls Football Festival in the South & Central Asia zone played at Colombo, Sri Lanka from April 30, 2009 to May 5, 2009.

The team lost to Jordan 0-1,drew with Iran 0-0, beat Sri Lanka 8-0 and 6-0, and beat Bhutan 15-0.
